We consider an extension of conventional univariate Kaplan-Meier type estimators for the hazard rate and the survivor function to multivariate censored data with a censored random regressor. It is an Akritas (1994) type estimator which adapts the nonparametric conditional hazard rate estimator of Beran (1981) to more typical data situations in applied analysis. We show with simulations that the estimator has nice finite sample properties and our implementation appears to be fast. As an application we estimate nonparametric conditional quantile functions with German administrative unemployment duration data. --nonparametric estimation, censoring, unemployment duration

The paper analyses the potential impact of stock market developments on lending behaviour from different perspectives. First we scrutinize the impact of stock market movements on the banks? and on the borrowers? balance sheets. Subsequently we estimate aggregate credit supply and demand functions including a stock market indicator as explanatory variable. The analysis reveals no major importance of the bank balance sheet channel for the relationship between stock market volatility and corporate financing possibilities of non-financial companies. A possible impact of stock market movements on banksÂŽ lending behaviour might be rooted in their impact on the balance sheets of corporate borrowers. The empirical results of the credit market analysis yield some confirming evidence for an impact of stock market developments. However, the results are not very stable and depend on the specification of the model and on the time period under observation. --

On the definition of unemployment and its implementation in register data : the case of Germany

"Unemployment information in individual level register data depends on institutional settings, administrative procedures and which registers are merged. In this paper we suggest different implementation strategies for common international and German legal unemployment definitions for the Sample of the Integrated Employment Biographies (IEBS). The IEBS belongs to a new generation of German merged register data that is more comprehensive than previous data sets. Our descriptive figures show large differences in the number of spells and the unemployment duration across implementations. This suggests that empirical results of labour market research are likely to depend on the underlying legal definition of unemployment and its implementation in this data." Magnetic Properties of the low dimensional spin system (VO)2_2P2_2O7_{7}: ESR and susceptibility

Experimental results on magnetic resonance (ESR) and magnetic susceptibility are given for single crystalline (VO)2_2P2_2O7_{7}. The crystal growth procedure is briefly discussed. The susceptibility is interpreted numerically using a model with alternating spin chains. We determine JJ=51 K and ή\delta=0.2. Furthermore we find a spin gap of ≈6\approx 6meV from our ESR measurements. Using elastic constants no indication of a phase transition forcing the dimerization is seen below 300 K.Comment: 7 pages, REVTEX, 7 figure

Which factors safeguard employment? : An analysis with misclassified German register data

"We analyse the main determinants for job separation with transition to unemployment using individual administrative data from Germany. While the sample size is large and the information in target variables is often highly accurate, non-target variables are subject to considerable measurement error due to a lack of relevance for the data generating process. We show that the high degree of misclassification can even persist after comprehensive logical editing and imputation rules were applied. We find that the measurement error has a sizable effect on our estimation results. Long tenure rather than a higher educational qualification appears to be the key ingredient for a safe job in Germany." Anaerobic fermentation of rice bran with rumen liquor for reducing their fiber components to use as chicken feed

Rice bran is a very cheap and abundant agricultural by-products in rice producing countries. Additionally, many developing countries used these by products as poultry feed. Rice bran (RB) contains high fiber and chicken is not capable to digest those fibrous feed effectively, resulting in low production performance. The main objectives of this study were to decrease fiber components of RB through fermentation by adding rumen liquor to increase their utilization efficacy in chicken. A single-step fermentation of RB was conducted for 12 h (n=6) under anaerobic conditions, maintaining proper temperature and ideal pH. Rice bran, buffer substances, and rumen liquor were mixed at the ratio of 1:2:3, respectively. The fresh and fermented rice brans were examined for the content of acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude fiber (CF), dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL). Other fiber components were determined by substracting the value of ADL from ADF (celluloses) and ADF from NDF (hemicelluloses), respectively. One-way analysis of variance was done to compare the mean nutrient components followed by Tukey’s multiple comparison tests at P<0.05. The pH of fermented brans were decreased with growing fermentation period but appropriate pH was maintained due to the developed protocol. After fermentation, the fiber components of RB were reduced significantly (P<0.05). However, CP component was not altered significantly after the fermentation of brans. The NDF, ADF, cellulose, hemicellulose contents were reduced by 16.2±0.52, 7.2±0.32, 20.0±0.38 and 23.6±0.54%, respectively compared to the fresh brans. As the fiber content reduced significantly after fermentation that clearly, increases the usability of brans as chicken feed

Involvement of mossy cells in sharp wave-ripple activity in vitro

The role of mossy cells (MCs) of the hippocampal dentate area has long remained mysterious. Recent research has begun to unveil their significance in spatial computation of the hippocampus. Here, we used an in vitro model of sharp wave-ripple complexes (SWRs), which contribute to hippocampal memory formation, to investigate MC involvement in this fundamental population activity. We find that a significant fraction of MCs (~47%) is recruited into the active neuronal network during SWRs in the CA3 area. Moreover, MCs receive pronounced, ripple-coherent, excitatory and inhibitory synaptic input. Finally, we find evidence for SWR-related synaptic activity in granule cells that is mediated by MCs. Given the widespread connectivity of MCs within and between hippocampi, our data suggest a role for MCs as a hub functionally coupling the CA3 and the DG during ripple-associated computations
